HP Compaq Presario SR5050NX

Overview

Full Review

Pros: Two items stand out for us on this new Compaq. The new chassis brings this system aesthetically in line with eMachines' desktops, which, in recent years, never sacrificed value for an attractive exterior. The other notable feature is the LightScribe DVD burner. You can definitely find sub-$500 PCs from other vendors with DVD burners, but none that we're aware of comes with the LightScribe capability that lets you put a custom image on the surface of a disc. We suspect that feature alone might entice you casual photo editors. Cons: Our biggest question with this system has to do with its core features. For $560, HP offers you a hot, noisy, 3.0 Pentium D 925, 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and a 250GB hard drive in a relatively attractive midsize desktop. But if you spend $10 more on HP's equally new Pavilion SlimLine s3020n PC, you get a roughly identical core configuration in a much more attractive, sleeker case. Yup, the Compaq gets you a bit more expandability with its full-size expansion slots (the SlimLine will accept only half-height cards), but off-the-shelf, we're not sure what the Compaq has to offer over the SlimLine. Outlook: The success of the Compaq Presario over the HP SlimLine or any other desktop might hinge on both its size and the fact that it has an Intel CPU inside. Big cases and Intel chips tend to translate well with PC shoppers who might not have done their homework. We'll withhold judgment until we can test the Presario in our lab, but right now the SlimLine is a tough budget PC to beat.
