eMachines T2824
Positives:
Eight-in-one media-card reader; stylish case despite the bargain-basement price.
Negatives:
Windows XP can barely survive on 256MB of system memory; there's no AGP slot; has a slow 5,400rpm hard drive; system isn't customizable until after purchase.
Facts:
Although the T2824 has an attractive design and a low price, we recommend spending a bit more to get a more powerful, well-rounded PC.

eMachines T5048
Positives:
DVD burner and media card reader are uncommon at this price; respectable performance on basic productivity apps.
Negatives:
Outdated EIDE hard drive interface clutters the inside with ribbon cables; roughly $100 more will get you a much better PC.
Facts:
Though it's a capable PC, particularly for the price, the budget eMachines T5048 starts to lose its appeal when you look at desktops that cost just $100 or so more. It's is a good pick if you need to keep to a strict budget, but otherwise we recommend spending a little more.

eMachines T5212
Positives:
Strong configuration for a low price; low-key design won't offend (unless you mind stickers); remote control support is perfect for beginning PC users.
Negatives:
Lack of a 3D graphics card could give you trouble with Windows Vista's Aero visual effects; older parts make the need to upgrade arrive that much sooner.
Facts:
eMachines T5212 is not our runaway budget winner, but it makes a strong attempt. It has better support features than its main competition and a less gaudy design. Its performance, however, is held back by specs that are either too slow, too old, or too small.

eMachines T5224
Positives:
Sharp new design; affordable, powerful-enough Windows Vista configuration; DVD burner and 15-in-1 media card reader give you lots of removable storage options.
Negatives:
An equivalently priced AMD chip would likely deliver more bang for the buck; gaming is not an option with the integrated 3D chip.
Facts:
It has a sleek new look and it runs Windows Vista as well as you'd want, but we wish Gateway had taken more risks with the new eMachines T5224 desktop. This system delivers respectable budget performance with most of the features you'd want, but we think you can find a better PC for the money if you shop around.

eMachines T5226 - Pentium D 925 3GHz
Positives:
The eMachines T5226 PC has a fair amount of expandability; strong support, both online and off; and acceptable core features and performance.
Negatives:
No built-in wireless networking; competing budget PC from HP has better performance for the dollar.
Facts:
eMachines' new T5226 desktop is powerful enough to run Windows Vista smoothly. It should also power you through most of the common modern-day applications without too much fuss. We just wish it offered more compelling hardware for the money. You can find faster, more-capable PCs for basically the same price.

eMachines T6420
Positives:
Rock-bottom price; supplies PCI Express x16 slot for graphics upgrades; generous software bundle; inexpensive warranty-upgrade options.
Negatives:
Not customizable; no FireWire port; rollerball mouse; slower processor than the model it replaces.
Facts:
The eMachines T6420 delivers major bang for your buck, including a roomy 200GB hard drive and upgradability in a fixed-configuration retail box. Still, we wish it were able to outperform the model it replaces.
Note: This product is part of the eMachines T series. .

eMachines T6536
Positives:
Better config and lower price than last quarter's model; should handle Windows Vista Basic with no problems; small dorm-friendly case.
Negatives:
Slower and less upgradable than the competition.
Facts:
eMachines has had a great run with its budget line of PCs, but thanks to aggressive pricing from some lesser-known competition, we can no longer give it the budget PC nod. The eMachines T6536 will serve you well as a basic computer for now, but its weak underpinnings limit its life span.
