Facts:
Gateway's midrange DX420X is a strong midrange desktop that's primed for smooth Windows Vista performance. You can configure this system with some uncommonly high-end parts, but the one feature it's missing is an option for HD DVD or Blu-ray. If you can live without an HD disk player, we recommend this Gateway, especially if you're looking for some extra performance.

We like that the new FX510XT gives you the option of purchasing a fully loaded, Intel Core 2 Extreme PC from Gateway, but it lacks the polish and the performance of other high-end systems. Its midtower case won't hog your desktop as much a full-tower PC, but that's not enough to help it stand out.

Midtower desktop case limits expandability; sloppy interior cabling compared to nearly every other high-end PC vendor's.
Facts:
It's rare that you see a performance-leading PC come in below $4,000, but Gateway's FX530XT has pulled it off. Complete with an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 quad-core CPU and a pair of ATI's highest-end 3D cards, this cutting-edge desktop won't make gamers and digital designers dig quite as deep to get their hands on it.

We liked this system when we covered its Windows XP-based debut back in November. The big news here is that Gateway has added an option for Windows Vista. Unfortunately, it's an awkward time for high-end gaming PCs to use Microsoft's new operating system, and Gateway hasn't adjusted well. We'd stick with the older model.
